The Eddie Eagle costume and materials, which are designed for young children, will help them reinforce the program’s lifesaving message, “If you see a gun, Stop! Don’t touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.”

The Eddie Eagle costume and materials, which are designed for young children, will help them reinforce the program’s lifesaving message, “If you see a gun, Stop! Don’t touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.”
Launched in 1988, Eddie Eagle was created by past NRA President Marion P. Hammer in consultation with child psychologists, elementary schoolteachers and law enforcement officers. Since inception, law enforcement officers, schoolteachers and community safety leaders taught the program to more than 26 million young children. In Tennessee, more than 675,000 children received Eddie Eagle’s life saving message through 335 law enforcement agencies in over 520 Tennessee schools.
In March 1998, the Tennessee legislature passed a resolution honoring and commending the Eddie Eagle Program, and urging schools and law enforcement agencies in Tennessee to use the program.
The Association of American Educators recently endorsed the program.
"On behalf of the many thousands of teachers belonging to the Association of American Educators, we would like to commend the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program," AAE officials said.
The program’s delivery is enhanced by the Eddie Eagle mascot costume, as the costume helps capture children’s attention during presentations, and leaves a lasting positive impression.
The Eddie Eagle costume represents a $2,800 value for the Lebanon Police Department and was made possible through contributions by the Wilson County Friends of NRA. The program is funded 100 percent through Tennessee Friends of NRA events, such as the upcoming Wilson County Friends of NRA Banquet on April 4. Friends of NRA is a grassroots fundraising program that fosters community involvement, raises money, and gives 100 percent of the net proceeds to qualified safety and educational programs. Friends of NRA is a nonpolitical nonprofit.

Juliet Police Department, Watertown Police Department and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department, incorporates an Eddie Eagle appearance into various community programs in Wilson County. We appreciate their commitment to the program and its mission to keep kids safe.”
